Week 13

BREAKING NEWS:
Please note there will be NO SCHOOL on Friday, December 6th.

In LITERACY we have been learning about contractions. We have been working hard to squeeze two words, such as "can" and "not," into one word using an apostrophe, such as "can't."

We have also been learning how to value other perspectives, and learned this week that our personal perspective can change as we learn new information. We watched the first half of the video below, and then wrote about which toys we would choose and why.

Most of us thought some toys, like dolls, were only for girls, while others, like cars, were only for boys. We then watched the rest of the video and learned about how Ewy Rosqvist won the Grand Prix! This information changed some of our perspectives on how we think about which toys we should play with, and how it's more important to just choose what we like!

Our sight words next week are:
-didn't
-don't
-can't
-wasn't
-you're

In MATH we have been working hard on addition by exploring story problems. Students are learning how to identify important information in a problem, solve it using different strategies, and represent it with an addition equation. Here is an example of a story problem we've been practicing:

Ms. Meier has four pairs of mittens.
Ms. McBride has six pairs of mittens.
How many mittens do they have all together?
8+12=20

In Inquiry we continued our inquiry on Calgary in the Past by exploring the Blackfoot First Nation.

In SCIENCE we explored how the Blackfoot gathered and dried food to prepare for the long, cold winter. We also compared Blackfoot clothing from the past, and the materials used as insulation (like feathers and animal fur) to materials used today!

In SOCIAL STUDIES we participated in guided discussion on hunting practices compared to present methods of gathering and preparing food. We made traditional bannock using modern ingredients (like shortening instead of animal fat) and cooked it in an oven instead of over the fire! It was delicious!

Thank you for growing with us!

Week 11

BREAKING NEWS

There will be NO school on Friday, November 22 due to conferences.

Conferences will take place on the evening of November 21st and all day Friday.

Please be sure to sign up for a conference as soon as possible through your mycbe account (link in sidebar).

In LITERACY we continued to  to edit our own work  and others' work by checking for punctuation, capitals and sight words. We also wrote about what empathy means to us and showcased our work on our bulletin boards.

Our sight words for next week are:

-were

-again
-really
-would
-light

In MATH we participated in math talks to represent numbers to 100 in different ways.

We have also continued to work on increasing patterns! We were given complex patterns to extend and repeat and recorded our pattern rules. We then created our own complex increasing patterns for our friends to extend

In SCIENCE we continued to develop as meteorologists by checking and recording the daily temperature. We graphed the daily report on a pictograph and used the information to identify patterns in weather for the first weeks of November. It is definitely getting colder! We also explored how Ms. McBride was able to insulate her home better by getting new windows and doors. The new windows and doors contain more material for better insulation and got rid of all the cracks that warm air was escaping through.

In SOCIAL STUDIES we continued our inquiry on Calgary in the Past by focusing on Calgary's Indigenous Communities. We used our Talking Sticks is as a tool for truthful and thoughtful communication. Our Talking Sticks helped us to share our perspectives and to honour the perspectives of others.

Thank you for growing with us!

-Ms. Meier and Ms. McBride

Week 10

BREAKING NEWS: There will be NO school on Monday, November 11th for Remembrance Day.

In LITERACY we continued to learn how to edit our own work and even began to peer edit! We learned all about Remembrance Day and wrote about what Peace means to us.

Our sight words for next week will all be question words as we will be learning the difference between a question and a statement!

Sight Words:

What
Where
When
Why
How

In MATH we have continued to work on building number sense up to 100 and focused on increasing patterns! We were given complex patterns to extend and repeat and recorded our pattern rules.

In SCIENCE we continued to use the scientific method to explore how heat changes food. Ms. Meier had a big problem trying to keep her pancakes warm while Hudson distracted her in the kitchenWith our previous knowledge about insulation, we built and constructed devices to keep our food warm!

We learned that some materials make more sense to keep the hot air in and cool air outWe then tested our creations to see if they were good heat insulators for our pancakes! THEY WORKED! YUM!

See Ms. Meier’s original pancake problem in the YOUTUBE link below.

In SOCIAL STUDIES we continued our inquiry on Calgary in the Past by focusing on Calgary's Indigenous Communities. We learned about what a Talking stick is and how many Indigenous communities use them as a way of respect to the speaker during a community circle. We are going to create our own classroom talking stick using the materials we gathered from the land.

Week 9

Hope you all had a happy and safe Halloween!

In LITERACY we continued using adjectives to make our writing more interesting. We created monsters and wrote detailed sentences using as many adjectives as we could!

We also continued to practice editing by looking for capitals, punctuation and misspelled sight words in our teacher's morning message and in our own writing as well!

WEEKEND WRITING CHALLENGE: See if you can retell one of your favourite books using at least 10 adjectives!

Our sight words for next week:
too
night
morning
who
once

In MATH we have continued to work on building number sense up to 100 and focused on shapes! We were so excited for each group to have their very own pumpkin and decided to use our pumpkins for EVERYTHING! We learned how to measure weight, length, and made estimations about how many pumpkin seeds each pumpkin would have!

Using some of our different math tools, we counted our pumpkin seeds by 2's, 5's and 10's! Some of our pumpkins had over 500 seeds!

After we finished counting, we collaborated with our groups and as a team brainstormed face shapes we could carve into our pumpkin!

In SCIENCE we continued to use the scientific method to explore how heat changes food! We learned that heating different food can be essential to kill bacteria and germs that may exist in our food. When we heat our food, it can make it easier for our bodies to digest and easier for our mouths to chew and make our meals taste better!

See our YOUTUBE VIDEO below to learn from Scientist Ms.Meier and Ms.McBride on how important cooking some of our food can be!

Youtube Link:

We created an experiment and posed the question, "How will heat change our pumpkin seeds? We recorded our own predictions and further observed how the heat made our pumpkin seeds safe and yummy to eat!

In SOCIAL STUDIES we continued our inquiry on Calgary in the Past by focusing on Calgary's Indigenous Communities. We read the story Everybody Needs a Rock by Byrd Baylor and followed the steps in the book to picking our own special rock!

We took our time to pick a stone that felt right to us and then made them unique by adding designs and pictures that are important to us.

Thanks for blogging with us!
WOO!

Have a wonderful weekend!
- Ms.Meier and Ms.McBride
