Happy Weekend!

Have a fantastic weekend <3

In LITERACY we continued to explore the elements of story  and learned all about having a different perspective.  We practiced putting ourselves in the character's shoes and completed journal entries as if we were that character. We read, watched, and listened to familiar stories and tried role playing to really understand how the character may be feeling. We watched the Pixar Short Film called "Preheated" and had students write as if they were the main character in the story. Students discussed how they would be feeling and the actions they would take to solve the problem in the story.

Our sight words for next week are:

shouldn't
wouldn't
February

gratitude

In MATH we continued to develop our SUBTRACTION strategies. We practiced subtracting using base ten blocks and learned how to check our work using addition! We continued to practice vertical subtraction and are now ready to start subtraction with REGROUPINGWe reminded ourselves that when we subtract, the order of the numbers DOES matter! Putting the bigger number on top is the only way our equation makes sense

In SCIENCE, we continued our water inquiry becoming WATER CONSERVATIONISTS!  This week, we learned how to create a survey and collect data! We brainstormed questions and surveyed each other to see different ways we were still wasting water. One of our survey questions was, "Do you leave the tap running while you brush your teeth?"

We continued to reflect on our own water usage and the impact it has on our environment. We watched a sad video about little ducklings who were affected by an oil spill and were determined to come up with a solution. We explored the scientific method and use a variety of materials to create the best insulator to keep our ducks safe and dry.

In SOCIAL STUDIES we continued our exploration of Indigenous communities by exploring the rich tradition of Indigenous storytelling and the meaning behind the Inuksuk.

LIVE LOVE LEARN

HAPPY WEEKEND!

In LITERACY we continued exploring the elements of stories. We read, watched, and listened to familiar stories. Then we continued to talk and wrote about the various story elements, such as characters, setting, problem, and solution. We watched another Pixar Short Film called "Taking Flight," and paused the video before it was over. Students had to focus on creating a solution to the problem and rewrite the ending of the story.

Our sight words for next week are:
again
which
quiet
maybe
who

In MATH we have been working on SUBTRACTION. We explored different subtraction strategies and practiced using them when given a challenging word problem.  We even challenged students to come up with their own subtraction word problem! We continued to practice vertical subtraction without regrouping!  We know that when we subtract, the order of the numbers DOES matter! Putting the bigger number on top is the only way our equation makes sense

In SCIENCE, we continued our project becoming WATER CONSERVATIONISTS!  We split into three groups this week and rotated between different teachers for more targeted and small group instruction surrounding water conservation in our own country.

We learned how to extract important information while researching and explored the website, True North Aid.We learned that 1 in 5 reservations in Canada are under a Boil Water Advisory.

We learned about a young Indigenous water conservationist, Autumn Peltier! She is only 13 years old and spoke to the UN and Justin Trudeau, advocating for clean water on reservations that have been polluted by the pipeline!

We continued to reflect on our own water usage and discussed the ways in which we could make changes in our own lives. We created VLOGS and recorded how inspired we were to make a difference!

In SOCIAL STUDIES we continued our exploration of The Blackfoot First Nation by exploring the rich tradition of Indigenous storytelling. Our wonderful Education Assistant, Mrs. Luckhardt shared the traditional story, “The Raven and the Owl.” We compared her version of the story to the video below.

Happy Fri-YAY! :)

We hope you all are staying as warm as possible out there! We were so happy and impressed with how many of you braved the freezing temperatures this week to come to school! ðŸ˜Š

In LITERACY we continued exploring elements of stories. We read, watched, and listened to familiar stories. Then we talked and wrote about the various story elements, such as characters, setting, problem, and solution. We watched a funny Pixar Short Film called "Snack Attack," and focused on describing the characters in the film using as many details as possible!

Our sight words for next week are:

In MATH we have begun to explore SUBTRACTION. We discussed how when we subtract our numbers get smaller and we are getting less. We started to practice vertical subtraction without regrouping!  We know that when we subtract, the order of the numbers DOES matter! Putting the bigger number on top is the only way our equation makes sense

We also experimented with "Numberless" word problems! Students had to use their knowledge of number sense to create a mathematical equation!

In SCIENCE we started a NEW Inquiry project and are becoming WATER CONSERVATIONISTS! We watched a video about a little girl in Ethiopia named Aysha, who walks for over 8 hours a day to get water for her and her family while her brothers attend school. After watching this video we reflected about how this made us feel and recorded our thoughts.

We were then SHOCKED to learn that even here in Canada and in our OWN province of Alberta, there are communities without safe drinking water. That made us feel disappointed but empowered to make a difference! We begun to reflect on our own water usage and discussed the ways in which we could make changes in our own lives.  We each made a water promise.

In SOCIAL STUDIES we continued our exploration of The Blackfoot First Nation by exploring the rich tradition of Indigenous storytelling. We continued our work with symbol stories and created a symbol that we felt represented us.

Thanks for learning with us!

Week 15

Welcome back, Grade Twos! We hope you all had a restful and wonderful winter break. We were so happy to see you all back and were so impressed with how quickly we settled back into our classroom routines 😊

In LITERACY we began exploring elements of stories. We read, watched, and listened to familiar stories. Then we talked and wrote about the various story elements, such as characters, setting, problem, and solution. We are very excited to begin writing our own stories!

Our sight words for next week are:
-right
-water
-use
-there
-they're

In MATH we have been exploring addition by practicing vertical addition with regrouping. We know that when adding double digit numbers we always start with the numbers in the ones column. If the sum is more than 10, like 8+7, we need to carry the ten over to the tens place. Then we add up all the numbers in the tens place, including the ten we carried over!

In SCIENCE we completed our inquiry on hot and cold. We explored the weekly weather reports and made predictions about how the changes in weather would affect our daily lives. We all predicted that Thursday would be an indoor lunch. We are all very excited to begin our inquiry on Water with Ms. Chaudhary next week.

In SOCIAL STUDIES we participated in a community circle to share about our winter break, and the people we spent time with who filled our hearts with joy. We also reflected on what those people did to make us feel happy, so that we can work towards spreading that same joy to others.

We continued our exploration of The Blackfoot First Nation by exploring the rich tradition of Indigenous storytelling. We learned about symbol stories, and like we can visit at at Writing-on-stone Provincial Park. We then created our own symbol stories on story blankets. They turned out beautifully and we are so proud of our hard work!

Thank you for growing with us!
